Slidell's neighborhoods near Lake Pontchartrain, including canal communities like Eden Isles, took heavy storm surge in Hurricane Katrina. Many homes were rebuilt or raised afterward, and their condensers now sit on stands or platforms with long line runs to the air handler.

Inland, toward Olde Towne and along the I-12 corridor, the housing is a mix of older homes and newer subdivisions with heat pumps. Pine pollen in spring and frequent summer thunderstorms mean filters, coils and surge protection all get attention here.

Olde Towne Slidell has older homes on raised foundations, some with ductwork running underneath in the crawl space.
