Thermostat and smart thermostat installs across New Orleans
A thermostat is the cheapest part of the system and the one most often blamed for problems it did not cause. We install it right, wire it properly and set it up for humidity, not just temperature.

Most smart thermostats in New Orleans homes need a C-wire for constant power, and older systems often do not have one. A proper install adds the wire or an adapter, sets the equipment type correctly for heat pumps and heat strips, and configures fan and humidity settings so the house stays dry as well as cool.
Why thermostat installs go wrong
Updated September 2026
Smart thermostats are sold as a DIY swap, and many are. The failures we see come from three places: no common wire, so the thermostat drains its battery and reboots; heat pump wiring set up as a gas furnace, so the heat strips run all winter; and the fan left on continuous, which blows moisture back off the coil into the house.
We handle all three, and we check the system itself while we are there, because a thermostat that suddenly stopped working is sometimes reporting a real fault.

What affects the cost of a thermostat installation
Most thermostat jobs are short; these are the things that can add time.
The thermostat itself
Basic programmable, smart or communicating models vary widely.
C-wire availability
A spare conductor is quick; a new wire run takes longer.
System type
Heat pumps and multi-stage systems need more setup.
Wall repair
Covering the old thermostat footprint may need a trim plate.
Zoning
Zoned systems need a thermostat per zone.
Diagnosis
A blank thermostat caused by a system fault becomes a repair call.
Programmable or smart
| Basic programmable | Smart Wi-Fi | Communicating | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remote control | No | App control | App, with the matched system |
| Humidity features | Rare | Common | Full dehumidify control |
| Needs a C-wire | Usually not | Usually yes | Proprietary wiring |
| Works with | Any system | Most systems | Same-brand equipment |

Smart Thermostat Setup
We install the thermostat, connect it to your Wi-Fi and the app, and set the schedule around how the house is actually used. More important, we configure the equipment settings: heat pump or furnace, stages, auxiliary heat lockout temperature, and dehumidify-on-cool where the model supports it. A smart thermostat left on its default settings often cools less efficiently than the old one it replaced. We leave you with the settings written down so you know what was changed and why.
Thermostat Not Responding
A blank screen or a thermostat that ignores changes is often not the thermostat. A tripped float switch on the condensate drain cuts power to it by design, a blown fuse on the air handler board does the same, and dead batteries account for plenty of calls. We check those before replacing anything. If the thermostat itself has failed, we can replace it on the same visit with a like-for-like model or an upgrade. Either way you get the reason it failed, so the new one does not go the same way.
C-Wire and Wiring Fixes
Many older systems run on four or five wires with no common, which smart thermostats need for steady power. The fix is either pulling a new wire through the wall, using a spare conductor already in the cable, or fitting a power adapter at the air handler. We choose the cleanest of those for your walls. We also correct miswired heat pump reversing valves, which cause a system to cool when asked to heat and are more common than you would think.

Thermostat settings for a humid climate
With average rainfall around 60 inches a year and a long humid season, indoor moisture matters as much as temperature in this city. That is why we set the fan to auto rather than on, turn on dehumidify-on-cool where the thermostat supports it, and avoid setbacks so deep that the system has to run flat out every afternoon, which cools the air fast but pulls out less water.

Check the system first
We confirm the air handler and outdoor unit are healthy.
- 2
Identify the wiring
Terminals labeled, equipment type confirmed.
- 3
Power solution
Spare conductor, new wire or adapter for a C-wire.
- 4
Mount and connect
New base, wiring, trim plate if needed.
- 5
Configure
Equipment type, stages, heat lockout, fan and humidity settings.
- 6
Test and teach
Cooling and heating tested; schedule and app shown.
Questions about Thermostat & Smart Thermostat Installation in New Orleans
Most models need one for reliable power. Without it they drain batteries or reboot. We add one or fit an adapter.
Often a tripped condensate float switch, a blown board fuse or dead batteries. We check before replacing it.
Auto, in this climate. Running the fan continuously blows moisture off the coil back into the house.
It can, mostly by avoiding cooling an empty house. The savings depend on how consistently you use schedules.
Yes. We install customer-supplied thermostats and configure them for your system.
Often it is a setup problem: the thermostat configured wrong or no auxiliary lockout. We fix the settings.
Honeywell, and the thermostats from Trane, Carrier, Lennox and others, including communicating models.
Usually under an hour, longer if a new wire has to be run through the wall.
