Frozen evaporator coil repair in New Orleans
Ice on an air conditioner looks strange in a hot city, but it is a common call here. A frozen coil means the system is not moving enough air or does not have enough refrigerant. We find which one and fix the cause.

An evaporator coil freezes in New Orleans when airflow is too low or refrigerant is low. A clogged filter, a dirty coil, a failing blower or closed vents cut airflow; a leak lowers the charge. Turn the system off to thaw it, catch the meltwater, and have the cause diagnosed before running it again.
Signs your coil is freezing
- Frost or ice on the large copper line
- Weak airflow even with the fan on high
- Warm air despite the system running
- Water pooling as the system shuts off
- Hissing or bubbling at the indoor unit
- Ice visible through the air handler panel
- Drain pan overflowing after a long run

Why a coil freezes in summer
Updated September 2026
The indoor coil runs just above freezing when everything is right. Warm air moving across it keeps it there. Cut that airflow, or drop the refrigerant charge, and the coil falls below freezing; moisture from humid air turns to ice, which blocks more airflow, and the problem feeds itself.
The ice melts eventually, but running the system frozen risks sending liquid refrigerant back to the compressor, and the meltwater can overwhelm the drain.

How a frozen coil call runs
- 1
Thaw safely
System off or fan only, meltwater caught.
- 2
Check the obvious
Filter, vents and blower condition.
- 3
Measure airflow
Static pressure and temperature drop across the coil.
- 4
Check the charge
Pressures, superheat and subcooling.
- 5
Fix the cause
Clean coil, blower repair, duct repair or leak repair.
- 6
Run and verify
Coil temperature and airflow confirmed normal.
Ice on the Refrigerant Line
Frost on the large insulated copper line at the outdoor unit is usually the first thing homeowners notice. It means the coil inside is freezing too. Switch the system to off, or run the fan only, to thaw it, and put towels around the air handler for the meltwater. Do not chip at the ice. Once it has thawed, we measure airflow and refrigerant pressures to find the cause, because restarting without a fix brings the ice back within hours.
Dirty Coil Cleaning
A coil coated in dust, pet hair and biological growth restricts airflow just like a clogged filter, and it is common where filters were skipped or poorly fitted. We clean the coil in place with a coil cleaner and rinse, or pull it for a deeper cleaning when it is badly fouled. A clean coil also drains better and smells better. We check the filter fit afterward so dirty air does not bypass it again. A filter gap of even half an inch lets enough dust through to coat a coil within a season.
Airflow Restriction Causes
Low airflow has several causes beyond the filter: a failing blower motor or capacitor, a dirty blower wheel, closed or blocked supply vents, a collapsed duct in the attic, or a return that is too small for the system. We measure static pressure and temperature drop across the coil to separate airflow problems from refrigerant problems, and then fix the one we find. If the charge is low, that is a leak, and it needs a repair rather than another top-off, or the coil will freeze again within weeks.

How long before it is cooling again
Thawing takes a few hours, and it has to happen before we can measure anything accurately, so run the fan only while you wait. Filter, coil cleaning and blower capacitor fixes are finished the same visit. A blower motor or a coil leak may need parts, and we tell you when.
Frozen coils and attic ducts
In slab homes across Gentilly and New Orleans East, the air handler and ducts usually sit in the attic. A duct crushed during storage in the attic, or a return pulling hot air through a gap, changes airflow at the coil in ways nobody notices until the system ices over. We check the attic ducts on every frozen-coil call, not just the filter.
What affects the cost of a frozen coil repair
The fix depends on why it froze; the diagnosis comes first.
The cause
A filter costs little; a blower motor or leak repair costs more.
Coil condition
A badly fouled coil may need to be pulled and cleaned.
Refrigerant
A leak search and recharge add time and materials.
Duct repairs
A crushed or disconnected run found in the attic.
Access
Tight attics take longer.
Water damage
Meltwater damage to ceilings is a separate repair.
Questions about Frozen Evaporator Coil Repair in New Orleans
Low airflow or low refrigerant makes the coil drop below freezing, and humid air freezes on it.
Turn the system off or to fan only, catch meltwater with towels, and call.
No. You can damage the coil fins or tubing. Let it thaw.
Usually a few hours with the fan running and the cooling off.
Yes, if the cause is not fixed. That is why we diagnose before restarting.
Yes. It is one of the most common causes here.
Sometimes. We test the charge to find out.
Yes. Liquid refrigerant can return to the compressor. Turn it off.
