The short answer

Most AC repairs in New Orleans come down to a failed capacitor or contactor, a clogged condensate drain, low refrigerant from a leak, a frozen evaporator coil or a failing fan motor. Typical repairs in the area run a few hundred dollars, and a proper diagnosis before any part is replaced keeps you from paying for guesses.

Signs to watch for

Signs your AC needs a repair now

  • Warm air from the vents with the fan running
  • Outdoor fan not spinning while the unit hums
  • Ice on the refrigerant line or indoor coil
  • Water around the air handler or a wet ceiling spot
  • System starting and stopping every few minutes
  • Musty smell when the AC first comes on
  • Breaker tripping when the system starts

What actually breaks on air conditioners here

Updated September 2026

Our summer call list is predictable. Capacitors and contactors fail from heat and corrosion. Drains clog with the algae that grows in a humid coil pan. Coils freeze when filters load up or refrigerant runs low. Fan motors wear out after years of running most of the year.

None of those should be guessed at. We check pressures, temperatures, amperage and airflow before naming a part, and we tell you the price before we replace it.

AC Blowing Warm Air

If the indoor fan runs but the air is warm, the outdoor unit usually is not doing its job. The common causes are a failed capacitor or contactor that stops the compressor or outdoor fan, a tripped outdoor breaker, low refrigerant from a leak, or a coil so iced that air cannot pass. Check the outdoor unit: if its fan is still, turn the system off and call, because running it that way can overheat the compressor. Most of these warm-air calls end with a part replaced from the truck the same visit.

Typical New Orleans-area planning range: $150-$400 standard hours; $250-$550 after hours. Market data, not our quote; your price depends on the factors below.

AC Short Cycling

A system that runs for two or three minutes, shuts off and starts again is hard on the compressor and poor at pulling humidity out of the air. Causes include an oversized system, a thermostat placed near a supply vent, low refrigerant, a dirty coil tripping a pressure switch, or a failing capacitor. We read the pressures and watch a full cycle to find which one it is, since each has a different fix. Swapping parts until the cycling stops is how a small problem becomes an expensive one.

Weak Airflow from Vents

Weak airflow with cold air coming out points indoors: a clogged filter, a dirty blower wheel, a failing blower motor or capacitor, a collapsed duct in the attic, or an evaporator coil starting to freeze. We measure static pressure and temperature drop, which tells us whether the blower is struggling against a restriction or simply not turning fast enough. Some of these are a filter change; some are a blower motor. We tell you which before anything is replaced, and we check the ductwork if the numbers point there.

The repairs this climate causes

Heavy humidity makes two failures far more common here than in drier cities: condensate drains that clog with algae and evaporator coils that freeze when airflow drops. Salt air off the Gulf adds a third, corroding contactors, fan motors and outdoor coils ahead of schedule. That is why every repair visit we make includes a drain flush and a look at the outdoor electrical parts, whatever the original complaint was.

What an AC repair typically costs here

Market data for the area puts most AC repairs in a band of a few hundred dollars; the failed part decides where yours lands.

Typical New Orleans-area planning range: $277-$400 typical, $92-$789 overall. Market data, not our quote; your price depends on the factors below.

The failed part

A capacitor and a compressor are worlds apart in cost.

Refrigerant

A leak search and recharge adds time and materials.

Access

Tight attics and crawl spaces take longer.

System age

Parts for older or discontinued units cost more and take longer to find.

Timing

After-hours calls carry a premium at most shops.

Second faults

A weak part found alongside the failed one may be worth fixing now.
