Better air filtration for New Orleans homes
The one-inch filter in most return grilles does little for air quality and clogs quickly in a system that runs most of the year. A properly sized media filter does far more with less maintenance.

An air filtration upgrade in New Orleans usually means installing a 4 to 5 inch media filter cabinet at the air handler, rated around MERV 11 to 13, which captures much finer particles than a standard 1 inch filter without choking airflow. The deeper filter lasts months instead of weeks. Electronic air cleaners are an alternative for homes that want reusable collection.
Why the standard filter falls short
Updated September 2026
Thin one-inch filters are designed mainly to protect the equipment, not to clean the air. Upgrading them to a high MERV rating in the same slot often restricts airflow, which can freeze the coil and strain the blower.
A media filter cabinet solves that with depth: much more filter surface, so it captures fine particles while letting air through easily, and it needs changing far less often.

What affects the cost of a filtration upgrade
Filtration upgrades are priced on the equipment and how it fits the air handler.
Filter type
Media cabinets and electronic cleaners differ in price.
Air handler fit
Some returns need adapting to fit a cabinet.
Access
Attic installations take longer.
MERV level
Higher-rated filters cost more to replace.
Static pressure
Duct changes if the system is already restricted.
Ongoing filters
Replacement media over time.
Filter options compared
| 1 inch filter | 4 to 5 inch media | Electronic cleaner | |
|---|---|---|---|

| Airflow resistance | Rises fast as it clogs | Low | Low |

4-Inch Media Filter Cabinet
A media filter cabinet mounts on the return side of the air handler and holds a filter four or five inches deep. The extra surface area lets it capture fine particles at low airflow resistance, and it typically lasts several months between changes. We install the cabinet, seal it to the return so air cannot bypass the filter, and set up the system so the filter is easy to reach. In an attic installation that easy access matters, because a filter that is hard to reach does not get changed.
MERV Ratings
MERV ratings describe how well a filter captures particles of different sizes. Ratings around 8 catch dust and lint; ratings around 11 to 13 also catch finer particles such as pollen, mold spores and much of the smoke and pet dander in the air. Going higher than the system can handle restricts airflow. We choose the rating based on your system's blower and duct capacity, and measure static pressure after installation to confirm the filter is not choking it. A rating the system can move air through beats a higher number it cannot.
Electronic Air Cleaner
An electronic air cleaner charges particles and collects them on plates that are washed rather than replaced. It captures fine particles effectively with low airflow resistance. The tradeoff is maintenance: the cells need regular washing to keep working, and some models produce small amounts of ozone, which we steer clients away from. For most homes a media filter is simpler; for households that prefer reusable collection, an electronic cleaner is a reasonable choice. We install it on the return with a prefilter, and show you how to pull and wash the cells.

Renovation dust and older homes
Most homes in New Orleans were built before 1978, and renovation work in older houses can put fine dust, including old paint, into the return air. A thin filter lets much of it through to the coil and back into the rooms. If you are planning work on an older house, a media filter installed before the work starts, and changed afterwards, keeps most of that dust out of the system.

Typically every several months, depending on the home.
It often helps with pollen, dust and dander, especially paired with humidity control.

Not exactly. Filters capture particles; UV and other purifiers target different contaminants.
