Deep cleaning for ductless mini-splits in New Orleans
Filter cleaning is not enough for a mini-split in this climate. Behind the filter, the coil and blower wheel collect dust and grow slime, and that is where smells and weak airflow come from.

A mini-split deep cleaning in New Orleans goes past the filters to clean the indoor coil, the barrel-shaped blower wheel and the drain pan and line, usually with a cleaning bag and low-pressure rinse. It clears musty smells, restores airflow and prevents drain clogs and leaks. Most homes here benefit from a deep clean every one to two years.
What builds up inside a mini-split
Updated September 2026
A wall-mounted head pulls room air across a cold, wet coil and pushes it out with a long blower wheel. Dust that gets past the filters sticks to the wet coil and the blower blades, and in humid air it grows a dark slime. Airflow drops, the unit smells when it starts, and the drain pan fills with debris until it overflows.
The fix is a proper cleaning of those parts, which cannot be reached by simply removing the filters.

What a deep clean includes
- Wall and floor protection
- Filters cleaned
- Indoor coil cleaned and rinsed
- Blower wheel cleaned
- Drain pan cleaned
- Drain line flushed and tested
- Airflow and operation checked
Mini-splits in a humid climate
In a long, humid cooling season, mini-split heads here run wet for months at a time, which is ideal for the slime that grows on blower wheels and coils. That is why deep cleaning is needed more often here than in drier places. We recommend it every one to two years for most homes, and more often in kitchens, bedrooms with pets, and homes where the unit runs around the clock.
Blower Wheel Cleaning
The blower wheel is the long cylinder you can see through the louvers, and on a neglected unit its blades are packed with dark buildup. That buildup cuts airflow sharply and throws the wheel out of balance. We clean it in place with a cleaning bag and rinse, or remove it when the buildup is heavy, then check that it spins freely and quietly. The improvement in airflow is often obvious as soon as the unit is restarted. We also check the fan motor bearings while the wheel is exposed.
Coil Wash
The indoor coil sits behind the filters and collects dust and growth on its fins. We cover the surrounding wall and electronics, apply a coil cleaner suited to the unit, and rinse the coil thoroughly into a cleaning bag so the water and debris do not run down the wall. A clean coil cools and dehumidifies better and removes the source of most mini-split odors. We check the coil fins while they are exposed and straighten any that are bent, since flattened fins block airflow as much as dirt does. The unit is dried and restarted only after everything is back in place.
Drain Pan and Line Flush
Debris washed off the coil ends up in the drain pan, and slime there is what clogs the drain line and causes a head to drip. We clean the pan, flush the drain line, and test that water flows freely to its outlet, including through the condensate pump on heads that use one. A clean drain is the difference between a mini-split that runs quietly and one that leaks down the wall in the middle of summer. We also check the slope of the line where it leaves the wall.

Signs your mini-split needs a deep clean
- Musty smell when the unit starts
- Weaker airflow than it used to have
- Dark specks blowing from the louvers
- Visible buildup on the blower wheel
- Water dripping from the head
- Unit running longer to cool
- Rattling or wobbling blower noise
What affects the cost of a deep clean
Deep cleaning is priced per indoor head.
Number of heads
Each indoor head is cleaned separately.
Buildup level
Heavily fouled units take longer.
Blower removal
Pulling the wheel for heavy buildup.
Head style
Wall heads, cassettes and ducted units differ.
Condensate pump
Cleaning or replacing a pump.
Outdoor unit
Rinsing the outdoor coil at the same visit.

- 3
Clean the coil
Cleaner applied and rinsed into a bag.
- 4
