AC compressor repair and replacement across New Orleans
A humming outdoor unit with no cold air does not always mean a dead compressor. We test it properly, fix what can be fixed from the truck, and give you a straight answer when it cannot. We answer 24/7.

A compressor that hums but will not start in New Orleans is often a failed capacitor or contactor, a repair done in one visit. A compressor that is grounded or locked usually means replacing the compressor or the whole outdoor unit, and on a system past 12 years old we will usually recommend the outdoor unit or full system instead.
Signs the compressor, or what starts it, is failing
- Outdoor unit hums or clicks but will not start
- Breaker trips seconds after the AC turns on
- Lights dim every time the system starts
- Warm air from vents while the outdoor fan runs
- Loud rattling or knocking from inside the unit
- Unit short cycles on and off every few minutes
- Oily residue around the refrigerant lines at the unit
Why the compressor is the part everyone worries about
Updated September 2026
The compressor pumps the refrigerant and is the priciest part outdoors. When it fails, repair versus replacement comes up at once, usually in the hottest week.
A weak start capacitor, a burned contactor or a failed fan motor overheating the unit can all stop a healthy compressor. We check those first, measure amperage and winding resistance, and only then name the compressor.

How we diagnose a compressor that will not run
- 1
Visual and electrical check
Contactor, capacitor, wiring and the breaker condition come first.
- 2
Amperage and resistance
We measure draw at startup and test each winding to ground.
- 3
Pressures and temperatures
Refrigerant readings tell us if the compressor is pumping.
- 4
The answer, in writing
Repair, compressor swap or outdoor unit, each priced.
- 5
The repair
Capacitor and contactor jobs are done from the truck; compressor swaps are scheduled.
- 6
Run test
Supply temperature, amperage and pressures checked after the fix.
Compressor Hard Start
The unit clicks, hums for a few seconds and trips on overload, or the lights dim every time it tries to start. On an otherwise sound compressor this is usually a failing start or run capacitor, sometimes a pitted contactor. We replace the failed part and, on older units, can add a hard-start kit that gives the motor extra torque at startup. That can buy a compressor years, but we will tell you if the readings say it is only buying months.
Typical New Orleans-area planning range: $150-$400 standard hours; $250-$550 after hours. Market data, not our quote; your price depends on the factors below.
Grounded Compressor
A grounded compressor has an internal winding shorted to its shell, and it trips the breaker instantly every time. It cannot be repaired. The options are replacing the compressor alone, replacing the outdoor unit, or replacing the matched system. A burned-out compressor can also leave acid in the refrigerant lines, so any replacement includes flushing or a filter drier and a proper evacuation before recharge. Skipping that step is how a brand-new compressor fails inside a year, and it is the part of the job we never shortcut. We also check why the old one grounded, since a failing contactor or low charge can do the same to its replacement.
Compressor vs Full Condenser Replacement
Swapping only the compressor keeps the old coil, fan motor and cabinet, all of which have aged just as long. It makes sense on a unit under about eight years old, especially if the compressor is still under a manufacturer parts warranty. Past that, a new outdoor unit or matched system is usually the better use of the money, because the next failure is rarely far behind. We quote both so you can see the difference, including what each option leaves behind: the age of the coil, the fan motor and the refrigerant the system runs on.

Why compressors work harder here
Salt air off the Gulf and months of humid heat wear outdoor units here faster than in drier regions, and the compressor feels it second-hand: a corroded contactor or a fan motor on its way out makes it start hot and run hotter. In dense blocks like Gert Town, where concrete outnumbers trees, some central systems cannot keep up with the heat load at all, so they run for hours without cycling and the compressor ages accordingly.
Three ways to fix a failed compressor
| Compressor only | New outdoor unit | Matched system | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Units under about 8 years | Coil indoors still sound | Systems past 12 years |
| Keeps old parts | Coil, fan, cabinet | Indoor coil and air handler | Nothing |
| Refrigerant | Same as existing | Must match the indoor coil | Current refrigerant |
| Time | About a day | About a day | One to two days |

What decides compressor repair versus replacement cost
Compressor work sits at the top of the local repair range.
What actually failed
A capacitor or contactor costs a fraction of a compressor.
System age
A compressor on a unit past 12 years rarely justifies itself.
Warranty status
A compressor still under parts warranty changes the math to labor only.
Refrigerant type
Older R-22 systems make recharge and repair far less practical.
Contamination
A burnout needs line flushing and a new filter drier.
Timing
Nights and weekends carry an after-hours premium at most shops.
Questions about AC Compressor Repair & Replacement in New Orleans
Often it is the capacitor, which starts both. Turn the system off and call; running it that way damages the compressor.
The electrical parts that start it can. The compressor itself is sealed; if the windings or valves fail, it is replaced.
Most of a day: recover, braze, evacuate, recharge.
Under about eight years old, especially under warranty, it can be. Older units, usually not.
An add-on capacitor for extra starting torque. It helps an aging compressor start, but does not fix a failing one.
A grounded compressor, shorted fan motor or failed capacitor. Stop resetting the breaker and call for a test.
We diagnose them, but R-22 is out of production, so major repairs usually point to replacement.
Copeland and the compressors inside Trane, Carrier, Lennox, Goodman and Rheem units cover most of what we replace.
