Old Gretna's cottages and shotgun-style homes were built long before central air, with tall ceilings and little space for ductwork. Cooling them well usually means ductless heads or a small-duct high-velocity system that fits through walls and floors without major demolition.

Farther from the river, the housing turns into mid-century and newer slab homes with conventional systems. There, attic air handlers, drain line backups and aging condensers make up most of the work.
