AC and small-duct systems for Bayou St. John homes

The homes along the bayou range from Creole cottages to large raised houses, and some date back to the city's earliest years, like the Pitot House on Moss Street. Tall ceilings, plaster, cypress and decorative trim make it hard to run conventional ductwork.

Small-duct high-velocity systems use narrow flexible tubes that fit through walls and floors with little disruption, and ductless heads can cool individual rooms. Either way, the goal is comfort without visible changes to rooms worth preserving.

Being close to the water and the park, these homes stay humid. Systems need to run long enough to dry the air, and a dehumidifier is sometimes the missing piece.
